MEET OUR PROVIDERS

obgyn-providers

As anyone who has searched for a new OB/GYN knows, finding the right doctor is a task that is often challenging, but highly important. Naturally, everyone wants a doctor who is up to date on the latest technological advancements and procedures. It is equally important, however, that patients have a doctor they can trust—especially when it comes to women’s healthcare.

OBGYN West has long been a leader in women’s healthcare in the Twin Cities west metro area. What makes them unique? Quite simply, they never stop learning, and they never stop caring.

For their patients, that means having a doctor who stays current on vital topics related to women’s health. For most women, it means one doctor—their doctor—following them through their entire pregnancy, delivery, and beyond.  Our physicians also provide a variety of other women’s health services such as infertility, bladder incontinence, and minimally invasive surgery, just to name a few.

Staying on top of all the latest medical breakthroughs in women’s healthcare takes considerable time. But for the doctors at OBGYN West, that is exactly what their driving focus is. Dr. Wesley Grootwassink explains, “At some clinics, doctors are coached by financial people that they only have seven minutes with each patient. That’s not how we work. If you’re talking about an issue that takes some time, we take the time.”

This “old-fashioned” attitude toward patient care is why so many of the clinics’ patients’ families have been with OBGYN West for generations. “Our practice has been around for over 50 years now,” Dr. Gregg Teigen says. “Thankfully, a large portion of the patients we see today were delivered by some of our original physicians.” It might not be medicine as usual, but for the doctors and patients of OBGYN West, there is no other way to have it.

Matthew T. Bigos, MD

Dr. Matthew Bigos has been described by his patients as invested in their care and approachable, with a warm sense of humor. He is empathetic, a good listener, and takes the time to attend to patients’ concerns and explains issues such as perimenopause in an understandable language.

He graduated from Penn State as an Administrative Chief Resident and is trained on da Vinci® Robotics and certified for robotics surgery. Dr. Bigos says, “OBGYN is a field where I can combine my passion for medicine with my love of surgery and patient and family-centered care. I truly enjoy being part of the most memorable events in a woman’s life, from menarche, to childbirth, to menopause.”

His areas of interest include minimally invasive and vaginal surgery, high-risk obstetrics, incontinence issues, Interstitial Cystitis, and adolescent gynecology. In his free time, he enjoys the outdoors with his beautiful wife.  Dr. Bigos and his wife have a newborn baby (Dominic) and two dogs.  As a native Pennsylvanian, he looks forward to learning the nuances and gems of Minnesotan life (“you betcha!”). Eric English, MD

From a very young age, Eric English knew “there was more to medicine than just learning the textbook.” The son of a family physician in Apple Valley, Minnesota, young Eric would often do rounds with his father. It was at his dad’s side that he learned what really mattered in life: Caring for the whole person, not just their physical condition.

“One time, my dad actually made me watch him set a girl’s broken arm,” Dr. English recalls. Watching his father perform this delicate and potentially scream-inducing procedure, Eric was impressed by his father’s skills, but also aware of the intense need for empathy for the patient’s fears and apprehension. (By the way, the re-setting went smoothly and, thankfully, quite quickly for all involved.)

Dr. English has always excelled in his practice and fits well in the world of obstetrics and gynecology. In fact, after attending the Creighton School of Medicine in Omaha, his residency at Mercy Medical Center in Chicago helped establish his reputation as one of the most accomplished practitioners of today’s minimally invasive procedures. But Dr. English strives to be more than a technically exceptional doctor and surgeon. He also endeavors to be the most caring doctor he can be for his patients.

“I’m grateful to come to OBGYN West. I love the positivity here and I feel their approach most closely matches my own,” he explains. “Like the other doctors, I want to take the time to work with you and get to know what’s on your mind. Truly, the patient interactions are what’s important to me.”

As one of this state’s top practitioners of da Vinci® robotic surgery, Dr. English looks forward to solving his patients’ challenges in women’s healthcare as well as sharing in their joys.

Dr. English is an Epicenter trainer for the upper Midwest area.

Growing up with three younger sisters, Eric is now (surprisingly) the father of five boys.  Dr. English and his wife reside in Sunfish Lake, Minnesota.

Wesley R. Grootwassink, MD

His surname may be a bit tricky (it’s pronounced “GROOT-wah-sink”…and it’s Dutch, by the way), but everything else about “Dr. G” is pretty easygoing.

“Becoming an OGBYN physician was a natural path for me,” explains Dr. G. “I love kids, I feel a special kinship and understanding of women and women’s healthcare, and there’s nothing like helping a family bring a new little one into the world. A pregnancy is one of the most joyful times in life.”

A 1991 graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. G tends to be reserved about his many professional accomplishments (some of which are listed here). But that doesn’t stop others from expressing their praise. Described by patients as a “caring and skilled doctor,” Dr. Grootwassink has received many 100% ratings on the National Doctor Database (nddb.net). One satisfied woman summed up her experience this way: “My OB retired a few years ago—and I wasn’t sure anyone would be as kind and attentive. Dr. Grootwassink is both. He indicated I needed surgery to do a bladder repair and partial hysterectomy, which I just recently had. He took so much time answering questions-and always returns phone calls!!” From infertility to cancer screening, he walks patients through every step of the process.

Other patients have described Dr. G as “understanding and supportive,” thanked him for “making me feel comfortable,” and one raved that it was “rare to find an awesome doctor!”

Eric G. Heegaard, MD

Eric Heegaard wasn’t always going to be an OB/GYN physician. At one point, he dreamed of being a rocker. Well, a soft rocker anyway. “I loved the singer/songwriters,” he admits. “Like James Taylor and Crosby Stills & Nash.” So after college, Eric moved to San Francisco with his two band mates to pursue his passion: singing and playing guitar and bass.

The experience was fulfilling, but superstardom just wasn’t in the cards. So Eric loaded up his ’73 Dodge van and headed to Seattle so he could attend medical school at the University of Washington.

All during those early adult years—while going to school and trying to make ends meet working at a lab and a nursing home—Eric continued to pursue his music, as well as another great passion: cooking. “I love to cook. I love to watch cooking shows. I also make the most smoky, creamy, fabulously fantastic spaghetti carbonara you’ll ever taste. It’ll make you weep with joy.” His world-famous salsa verde is not bad, either.

It’s that enthusiasm, humor, and complete commitment that patients respond to in Dr. Heegaard.  “It overwhelms me to think how lucky I am to have found a doctor who is so obviously competent and trustworthy, while also caring and compassionate. You are the best.” Wrote one satisfied new mom after successful infertility treatment: Dr. Heegaard credits his dad for steering him in the right direction. “Dad was a general practitioner in our hometown of Alexandria, Minnesota,” he explains. “He did a lot of OB work and just loved it, especially the joy of bringing new life into the world. When I went to med school, I knew OBGYN was the right direction for me.”

His clinical passion is in the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and his mission is to increase awareness among patients, the general public, and the medical community of this condition.

Dr. Heegaard is the proud father of two children. When he is not carefully tending to his flock of patients, he can be found playing his guitar, reading historical fiction, and paging through his library of cookbooks and cooking magazines.

Terri S. Johnson, MD

Born and raised in Two Harbors, MN, Dr. Terri Johnson puts ordinary Minnesota nice to shame. As one of her medical associates says, “Terri has a lot of stamina and is incredibly generous. She can do a huge favor for a patient or colleague and think nothing of it. Sharing her skill and energy just comes naturally. The only complaint I’ve ever heard about her is that she’s much too cheerful in the middle of the night.”

Before attending medical school, Dr. Johnson worked as a medical technologist and her background in laboratory medicine still comes in handy. But working in a lab didn’t provide enough contact with the human side of medical care. “I love getting to know my patients.”

Dr. Johnson has practiced at OBGYN West since 1987 and is the clinic’s senior physician. She’s cared for several generations of families and been part of more pregnancies than she can count.

Dr. Johnson is a skilled gynecologic surgeon who has mastered minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Johnson is equally well versed in medical approaches to problems that can often avoid the need for surgery.

Alhough Dr. Johnson is highly accomplished and has been named a “Top Doctor” by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine for several years, you’d never know it from talking to her. She’d rather talk about her medical mission trip to Bangladesh or her three children.  In her free time she enjoys downhill skiing, a sport that has been part of her life since her early years in northern Minnesota.

Christine M. Larson, MD

As a medical  school graduate from Hershey, Pennsylvania (known as “the Sweetest Place on Earth”), it’s no surprise Dr. Tina Larson has such a sweet disposition and upbeat attitude toward her work.

“At OBGYN West, I love how we get to take care of our own patients,” she explains. “I get to see them all the way through their pregnancies and their deliveries. There’s no better place to develop a strong connection with the women you care for.”

Of course, sometimes obstetrics and gynecology care calls for long days and late-night hours, but that doesn’t seem to faze the dedicated doctor. “I enjoy what I do,” Dr. Larson smiles. “Being a mom of two boys has helped me to really appreciate being with my patients throughout their whole process. The long hours and the late nights are just part of the journey and I wouldn’t miss a minute of it.”

“And I love the deliveries,” she says with a smile. “There’s really nothing like handing a couple their beautiful new baby. It’s indescribable, really.” And, she admits, challenging at times…especially with high-risk pregnancies. “When a woman’s expecting twins, or she’s suffering from diabetes or hypertension, there are added risks,” she concedes. “But like most Minnesotans, our patients take pretty good care of themselves.”

It may be a long way from the chocolate-y goodness of Hershey, but for Dr. Tina Larson, the Twin Cities is “home sweet home”!

“I truly care about my patients and I take the time necessary to properly address their medical concerns,” says Dr. Jennifer Smolinski. “As part of my job as a doctor, I also fulfill a role as a nurturer and confidant. I enjoy getting to know my patients.”

Dr. Smolinski says there were many reasons she decided to concentrate on obstetrics and gynecology in medical school. She felt that this specialty was one in which she could truly be an ally and a friend to her patients. “I love the opportunity to take part in major events in women’s lives and being able to relate with my patients,” says Dr. Smolinski. “It is so rewarding to be able to teach women and encourage them to become advocates for their own health and the health of their loved ones.”

Prior to joining OBGYN West, Dr. Smolinski worked at another OBGYN clinic in the Twin Cities. While in residency at Penn State College of Medicine, Dr. Smolinski received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism & Excellence in Teaching Award two separate times.

Dr. Smolinksi and her husband recently welcomed a baby boy (Dominic) to the world.  In her free time she enjoys going up to her family’s cottage on Lake Mille Lacs. Dr. Smolinski can also be seen at the dog park playing with her chihauhua, Obie, and she enjoys dining out with friends and family.

Kellie C. Stecher, MD

“I know how important it is to patients that I take the time to listen and learn about them and their medical issues,” says Dr. Kellie Stecher. “I always have my patients’ best interests at heart.”

Dr. Stecher discovered her passion for obstetrics and gynecology after experiencing her first delivery. When she delivered that baby, she said it was a truly magical moment and it confirmed that OBGYN was the perfect specialty for her.

Beyond delivering babies, Dr. Stecher’s areas of interest include fertility, surgery, and adolescent gynecology. She also enjoys advising patients on how to adopt healthier lifestyles for themselves and their families. “As women, we often focus on taking care of everyone but ourselves. I like to work with my patients in focusing on their own health and wellness and get them to understand how the healthy choices they make today will have a positive impact on their entire family.” She practices this mindset throughout all of women’s reproductive years and beyond.

Before moving to Minnesota, she was a faculty member at Michigan State University, where she completed her residency.

Dr. Stecher enjoys living in Minneapolis, and during her after-work hours spends time with her husband, Joe, their two young children, and their family dog.  Her hobbies include horseback riding, Pure Barre, and playing the alto saxophone and piano.

Gregg A. Teigen, MD

Gregg Teigen (pronounced TY-gen) has been called a lot of things by those who know and love him: a kind and accomplished doctor, a fun-loving father of two girls, and a funny, sensitive guy from St. Paul. But on a recent summer day, after swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then running a 26.2-mile marathon in one day, Dr. Teigen added another descriptor to his name: Iron Man® Finisher.

“I’ve always been active and run marathons,” he explains. “But then a couple of years ago, I competed in a triathlon. And in the back of my mind—for like 20 years—I’ve wanted to do an Iron Man.”

It’s that same kind of discipline and “can-do” attitude that Dr. Teigen brings to everything he does, especially his work life. “I like OBGYN West because we’ve been on the forefront in this community providing minimally invasive procedures for our patients,” he explains. “Some are called laparoscopic procedures and I like how they offer less discomfort, better relief, and quicker recovery to my patients.”

Dr. Teigen also appreciates that OBGYN West is providing more gynecology and obstetrics services inside the clinic that once required a hospital visit, including cancer screenings. “These procedures are just as effective as what you’d get at the hospital,” he explains, “but again, they get you home and back to your day-to-day life a lot quicker.” Dr. Teigen understands the importance of continuity at home.

Incidentally, Gregg and Kris have another connection with OBGYN West. He and his colleague, Dr. Wes Grootwassink, actually met through their wives, when Wes was in medical school and Kris and Wes’s wife, Christy, were working together as nurses.

“Wes and I have been friends for a long time,” explains Dr. Teigen, who spent two years in medical school with Dr. Grootwassink. “It’s been a treat to practice with him and all the other great doctors at OBGYN West. I like how we make it our practice to work hard and play hard, too.” Whether that means there’s another Iron Man in Dr. Teigen’s future, that’s anyone’s guess. But no matter what he does, you can bet he’s in it for the long run.

Katie J. Toft, MD

Dr. Toft joined the OBGYN West team in 2009 following completion of her residency program at the University of Michigan. She is originally from the area—growing up in the small town of Nicollet, Minnesota—which helped her develop a great  Midwestern work ethic. She moved back to Eden Prairie to raise her family close to family and friends.

“We had an extensive minimally invasive surgery program at the University of Michigan,” explains Dr. Toft. “I’ve been performing advanced laparoscopic surgery since I was an intern. That’s part of the reason I wanted to work with OBGYN West. I feel very comfortable with my experience in these new minimally invasive procedures, including the da Vinci® surgical system, and I’m happy to provide that option for my patients.”

Dr. Toft has always been a quick study and more than a little ahead of the curve. While in high school, she spent her senior year taking freshman college courses just because she got “kind of bored.” In addition to a double load of school work and a part-time job decorating cakes at her father’s bakery, she also was involved in volleyball, dance line, choir, and played saxophone, flute, and piccolo in the high school band. “I’ve always had a lot of inner drive,” she admits. “If I put my mind to something, I was going to do it.”

By age 19, she had already decided she was going to be a doctor—but not before taking a year off after getting her undergraduate degree (at the ripe old age of 20) to work in group homes with autistic and severely mentally handicapped people. And to get married to her college sweetheart, Eric.

Then, it was off to the University of Minnesota, where she soon learned OBGYN was the perfect specialty for her. “The days were long, but I loved every minute of it,” Dr. Toft confesses of her Obstetrics and Gynecology rotation. “I liked taking care of women, especially through labor and delivery. But then I got to see them back for their annual exam, and you can follow them over time. I really like that continuity of care and getting to follow someone through major life events.”

When it came time to find that first job, OBGYN West was Dr. Toft’s first choice. Not only did she like the other doctors she met (“they seemed very straightforward, easy to talk to, and very down to earth,” she confides), but she admired their “with you every step of the way” approach.

“I’m interested in having long-term relationships with my patients. I want to take them through their pregnancies, help them transition into menopause. I’m a very positive person, but I always give the facts. So if a patient comes to me, they’ll know all their options. And they’ll know I’ll help them make good decisions.”

Dr. Toft likes to participate in 5K and 10K races in the area and enjoys spending time outdoors fishing, jet skiing, and bike riding. She and her husband, Eric, have three children: Jacob, Abigail and Clara.

Dr. Weinrich loves his job. It’s evident the minute he walks into a room. His welcoming smile. The easy laugh. The warm, friendly greeting. No matter who you are, Dr. Weinrich is completely present and ready to help you any way he can. He also exudes a quiet confidence. Perhaps it’s the result of the thousands of pregnancies he’s been a part of over the years. Or the countless minimally invasive surgeries he’s performed. There’s no question Dr. Weinrich takes his work seriously—but not himself.

“Medicine can be way too serious,” Dr. Weinrich admits. “You need a good sense of humor. If you don’t have that, what patient is ever going to warm up to you?”

And warm up, they do. Patients tell Dr. Weinrich they appreciate his down-to-earth communication style. Dr. Weinrich has a great personality as well as a pleasant bedside manner. They tell me I don’t talk down to them, that I really get to know them.” Dr. Weinrich takes pride in providing the very best women’s healthcare solutions for his patients.

Now living in Waconia with his wife and two children, Dr. Weinrich looks forward to building long-lasting relationships with his patients at OBGYN West. “In this practice, you really get to know patients and they get to know you. I like meeting new people. And I like having people depend on me.”

When he’s not serving his patients, Dr. Weinrich enjoys hanging out with his family at their cabin in western Wisconsin and spending time on the water, fishing and boating.

Dear Dr. Teigen and the other OBGYN West staff,

We wanted to take a moment to say how thankful we are for everything you have done for us. On January 20th you helped welcomed our first baby girl into the world. Sweet, little Annabelle was supposed to be a Valentine’s baby and ended up arriving a month early. We actually got to take her home on my birthday! She is happy, healthy and definitely keeping us busy.

You have all been so wonderful and helpful during my numerous pregnancy visits and we truly appreciate how kind and welcoming everyone is.

Please help yourselves to a treat on us and thank you thank you THANK YOU!!

Dr. English is a great fertility doctor! He has a lot of knowledge & cheerfulness mixed with the perfect amount of awkward nerdiness that puts me at ease during my appts. I am a scientist to awkward nerdiness is what I do best. I typically do not prefer male OBGYNs, but the male staff here is awesome!

I love Dr. Stecher. I followed her to this practice. She was kind, efficient and knowledgeable. I would recommend her to anyone in need of an OBGYN. She did an incredible job on my surgery!

Dr. Weinrich is a fabulous Doctor. I had a number of procedures done by him that required hospital stays. He spent a great deal of time with me making sure that I understood everything clearly. He is personable, and competent. I would recommend him to any of my friends without hesitation. Only good things to say about him.

I love OBGYN West. Dr. Toft is caring and an excellent listener. I have been coming here for years. All the nurses, techs, PAs- everyone is always so nice and upbeat. Thank god when I switched insurance OBGYN West was still in my network!

I feel like I really matter when I visit Dr. Teigen. He understands what my needs are and how to best go about treatments. I don’t ever feel pressured. I feel optimistic about my future fertility issues, general health and well-being because of him. I am very thankful for the knowledge and professionalism that he shows.

I have been incredibly please with Dr. Larson. Her knowledge of me and my health is beyond impressive. I really feel that she had my best interest in mind and truly listens to me. The second I hear that someone is looking for an OB, I can’t wait to tell her how amazing Dr. Larson is.

My sister and I both see Dr. Johnson & have for many years. We both work in the medical prof. and have very high expectations. She exceeds our expectations. Dr. Johnson shows genuine interest in me as a patient & is also willing to engage in small talk about what’s going on in your life.

Dr. Heegaard is one of the most thorough and caring doctors around. He spends as much time as needed with you and makes you feel at ease. I just can’t say enough good things about him. You cannot go wrong seeing him.

Wonderful OB; he delivered my second baby. He is wonderful doctor who listens and is extremely knowledgeable. He makes an effort to deliver his own patients which I appreciate. He is confident and reassuring. I would highly recommend him.

Dr. English is very focused on his patients. He is very knowledgeable, kind & attentive. Exactly what a worried pregnant woman needs! I always feel important when I come to an appointment with him. I transferred from a different clinic to keep Doctor English as my provider.
