Wesley R. Grootwassink, M.D.

Tough name, gentle doctor.

His surname may be a bit tricky (it's pronounced "GROOT-wah-sink"...and it's Dutch, by the way), but everything else about "Dr. Wes" is pretty easy going.

"Becoming an OGBYN was a natural for me," explains Wes. "I love kids, I feel a special kinship and understanding of women and there's nothing like helping a family bring a new little one into the world. It's one of the most joyful times in life."

A graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1991, Wes tends to be reserved about his many professional accomplishments (some of which are listed here). But that doesn't stop others from being effusive in their praise. Described by patients as a "caring and skilled doctor", Dr. Grootwassink has received many 100% ratings on the National Doctor Database (nddb.net). One satisfied woman summed up her experience this way: "My OB retired a few years ago-and I wasn't sure anyone would be as kind and attentive. Dr. Grootwassink is both. He indicated I needed surgery to do a bladder repair and partial hysterectomy, which I just recently had. He took so much time answering questions-and always returns phone calls!!"

Other patients have described Dr. Grootwassink as "understanding and supportive", thanked him for "making me feel comfortable", and one raved that it was "rare to find an awesome doctor like you."

A father of three (including a set of twins) and a husband of one (his wife, Christy, a registered nurse), Wes jokingly refers to himself as a "dinosaur" for bucking the trend towards managed care in medicine. "I'm not interested in being a ‘provider' " he winks, referring to a common term bandied about by HMO's. "I want to be your doctor. I want to be the one who meets with you, listens to you, treats you and brings your babies into the world." Being that accessible "may not be the easiest way to conduct my practice", he admits, "but it's certainly the most satisfying."

When Wes is not helping his patients (which is often), he likes to hang out with his family, bike, golf, run marathons and scuba dive. "I've always enjoyed tropical fish," Wes jokes. "Scuba diving gives me a chance to swim in their tank for a change."
