Susan J. Cushman, M.D.

A mainstay in her patients’ lives.

When Dr. Susan Cushman graduated from college, she planned to be a writer. After a few years writing for Medtronic, a love for medicine and science took over. She returned to school and, 10 years later, emerged from her residency program a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology.

“With my experience at Medtronic I considered cardiology. I chose OBGYN because most women are interested in their health and are willing to make changes to improve it. In our field there a lot of problems we can help women minimize or fix and that is very rewarding.”

Practicing at OBGYN West since 1989, Dr. Cushman enjoys a longstanding relationship with many of her patients. “It has been a privilege to be a steady part of my patients’ lives as they progress through big changes like graduation, marriage, childbearing and retirement. Over time, we’ve really gotten a chance to know each other and interact with trust and respect. One of the best compliments I’ve received was one of my patients saying I was a mainstay in her life.”

As an office-based gynecologist, Dr. Cushman is interested in all aspects of general gynecology, with special focus on preventive care and helping her patients achieve healthy lifestyles.

Volunteer medical trips to Nicaragua have also been an important part of Dr. Cushman’s medical experience. “I was so impressed with the Nicaraguan women’s strength and dignity. The trips convinced me that preventive care is really valuable, seeing what happens when women don’t have access to it. I have a deeper appreciation for what medicine and science can accomplish in the world.”

As a local volunteer, Dr. Cushman co-founded Melpomene Institute for Women’s Health Research and the Northern Lights Running Club for Women. Currently she is active on the executive board of the Minnesota Women’s Golf Association.

Dr. Cushman and her husband of more than 30 years have a grown son and two cats. In addition to her practice and volunteer activities, Dr. Cushman enjoys reading, hiking, cycling and travel to far-flung destinations.
