The Fourth Month

Even if you're thin, your belly is developing by this time, and the old wardrobe is feeling kind of snug. Your breasts are fuller and heavier. And you're probably drawing a lot of compliments from friends and family because your face is taking on that "glow of motherhood". It's caused by increased blood flow throughout your body, which can also show as spider veins. These will fade after pregnancy.

The fatigue and queasiness of the first trimester are giving way to new energy, and a feeling of well-being. If you're not already exercising regularly, this is a great time to start, if your doctor agrees.

Inside, your baby is growing faster, and starting to take on a familiar human shape. Organs are developing, and starting to function.

If you're over 35, your doctor may recommend a test called an amniocentesis at about this time. It's a common test for Down syndrome and other congenital abnormalities. The tests itself, is pretty painless, but it may make you a little anxious because of the possible results. One guaranteed good outcome: if you wish, you can also find out the sex of your baby.
